Wheels & Disk Hubs

We offer 2 types of wheel cleaning and disk hub painting.

Wheels

Your wheels are probably the hardest part of your car to clean and protect safely, as they are subjected to continuous contamination by brake dust and road grime. Brake dust is a major problem for owners of cars with alloy wheels, as it is corrosive, unsightly and difficult to remove. When braking, the surface of brake pads is worn away, producing dust that is deposited on other nearby surfaces, i.e. your rims. Brake dust is actually a combination of carbon fibres, metal filings and adhesive residues. The compounds used to make brake pads vary greatly in hardness and metal content, meaning that the amount of brake dust generated can vary significantly form car to car.

Brake dust is often deposited onto the rims at very high temperatures, meaning that it immediately etches into any protective coating. The adhesive residues in brake dust not only cause it to bond firmly to everything it touches, but also initiate corrosion in their own right, as they are often acidic. Metal filings contained in brake dust have a tendency to oxidize, and if they do this when in contact with the metal of the rim the process of galvanic corrosion sets in. Thus, brake dust gradually erodes protective coatings until they fail, after which point the rim itself starts to corrode. This gradual erosion not only makes the rim look unsightly, but can also eventually affect the structural integrity of the wheel.

Option 1

Is our basic option where we clean the wheels whilst still on the vehicle, we clean the face side and the inner wheel with soft brushes and non acidic wheel cleaner. If the wheels are covered in heavy brake dust then the inner wheel may be left pitted, with the wheels still on the vehicle it will be difficult to remove. Once the wheels are clean and dry we then use a spray polish to shine up the wheels. Please note that the spray polish is an added extra and does not give protection like that of wheel wax. We recommend the wheels to be removed for better cleaning.

Option 2

Is our detail option this involves removing the wheels for a better clean, once the wheels are removed we give them a thorough clean with non acidic wheel cleaner and soft brushes. We then clay the wheel using a soft clay and lubricant to remove any contaminants that are bonded to the wheel followed by tar remover which is sprayed on and wiped off to remove road tar. A special wheel wax is applied to protect the wheel from further contamination; however, such coatings are themselves eroded over time, and should be replaced every few months if adequate protection is to be maintained.

Disk Hubs - Painting

With manufacturers having to cut costs all the time your disk hubs only get a thin layer of paint this over a very short period of time can erode making the disk hubs look unsightly against your shiny wheels. We offer a disk hub painting service, to correct this problem and with our detail option has been known to last over 2 years. Please be aware that it is advisable to get your disks and pads checked first before we paint the disk hubs as we don’t want to paint them, then a few weeks later you need new disks and pads. This will remove the painted disk hubs and waste your money.

Option 1

Is our basic painting option which involves painting the disk hub with the wheels on the vehicle. While cleaning the wheels we clean the disk hubs the best we can, with limited access this is difficult. Disk hubs are then painted through the wheels if access allows depending on the wheel design., if not we recommend the detail option 2. We cannot guarantee how long this will last.

Option 2

Is our detail option which involves removing the wheels, so most customers have it done while having the wheels cleaned and waxed. With the wheels removed we can have better access to the disk hubs, we then can wire brush the disk hubs to remove any loose paint and brake dust. Next a tar and glue remover is sprayed on to help clean the surface, then it is dried before having 3 coats of primer and 3 coats of silver paint.
